Game Description

The future is under threat, and the world's deadliest secret agent is ready for action! Perfect Dark throws you into a gripping science-fiction conspiracy as Joanna Dark, an elite operative working for the mysterious Carrington Institute. When a desperate scientist requests extraction from the powerful dataDyne Corporation, Joanna uncovers a sinister plot involving corporate espionage, extraterrestrial visitors, and a threat that could change humanity forever. Infiltrate heavily guarded skyscrapers, outsmart ruthless security forces, and unravel a mystery stretching far beyond Earth. With cinematic storytelling, stealth-based missions, and explosive first-person shooting, Rare delivers a futuristic espionage adventure worthy of the Nintendo 64's greatest action games!

If you thought GoldenEye 007 pushed console shooters to their limits, prepare for the next evolution! Master an extraordinary arsenal featuring the Falcon 2 pistol, Laptop Gun, CMP150, and FarSight XR-20, with weapons offering distinctive secondary firing functions. Deploy a Laptop Gun as an automated sentry turret, use the CamSpy to investigate dangerous locations, and tackle mission objectives that grow more demanding across Agent, Special Agent, and Perfect Agent difficulties. Explore the Carrington Institute's training facilities, sharpen your shooting skills in the Firing Range, and uncover secrets hidden throughout the campaign. With intelligent enemies, futuristic gadgets, and sophisticated mission design, every assignment rewards precision, experimentation, and quick thinking.

And when the espionage ends, the multiplayer mayhem is just beginning! Challenge friends in the legendary Combat Simulator, featuring customizable arenas, weapon selections, and computer-controlled Simulants with different personalities and skill levels. Team up in Cooperative missions, turn against Joanna in the ingenious Counter-Operative mode, or compete in intense four-player split-screen battles. Unlock multiplayer challenges, experiment with elaborate match settings, and discover why Rare's futuristic shooter became a favorite among serious Nintendo 64 fans. Developed and published by Rare in 2000, this physical Nintendo 64 cartridge release stands alongside GoldenEye 007 as a defining collector favorite and one of the platform's most ambitious first-person shooters.

Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak Compatibility

Perfect Dark requires the official Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak to access its complete single-player campaign and most advanced gameplay features. This memory upgrade adds 4MB of RAM to the Nintendo 64 console, increasing total system RAM from 4MB to 8MB. Unlike games that use the accessory only for enhanced graphics, Perfect Dark depends on the Expansion Pak for its full story experience, Cooperative and Counter-Operative modes, and four-player multiplayer.

  • Expansion Pak Required: Yes — required for the single-player story campaign and the complete game experience.
  • With Expansion Pak: Unlocks Solo Missions, Cooperative and Counter-Operative campaigns, up to four-player Combat Simulator battles, and additional features including high-resolution graphics.
  • Without Expansion Pak: Limited Combat Simulator gameplay remains available for one or two human players, with support for up to eight computer-controlled Simulants and multiplayer Challenges. The story campaign and most other modes are inaccessible.

Not sure if you have an Expansion Pak? With your Nintendo 64 powered off and unplugged, check beneath the Memory Expansion cover on top of the console. The Expansion Pak is identifiable by its distinctive red-topped module.

Nintendo 64 Controller Pak Compatibility

Perfect Dark supports the optional Nintendo 64 Controller Pak (Memory Card) for storing and transferring Agent files and compatible multiplayer data. The game also saves directly to its cartridge, with three available cartridge-based Agent save slots, so a Controller Pak is not required to save normal campaign progress. Players can use a compatible Controller Pak to maintain additional save files or transfer saved data between compatible game cartridges.

Legacy and Influence

Three years after GoldenEye 007 revolutionized console shooting, Rare returned with a futuristic successor determined to raise the bar even higher. Perfect Dark expanded the objective-driven first-person shooter formula with more elaborate enemy behavior, dual-function weapons, advanced gadgets, and a richly detailed science-fiction storyline. Its Cooperative mode let friends tackle story missions together, while Counter-Operative mode offered a brilliant twist: one player controlled Joanna Dark while another took command of enemies trying to stop her. These ambitious features helped establish Perfect Dark as one of the Nintendo 64's defining technical and gameplay achievements, demonstrating just how much depth a console FPS could deliver.

The game's multiplayer innovations were equally impressive. Where GoldenEye 007 made four-player deathmatches a living-room obsession, Perfect Dark transformed that foundation into a customizable combat playground filled with intelligent Simulants, team-based scenarios, player statistics, and unlockable challenges. Its computer-controlled opponents allowed solo players to enjoy elaborate multiplayer battles, while their varied behaviors added unpredictability to every match. The result was a remarkable showcase for the Nintendo 64's multiplayer capabilities and a lasting favorite among FPS enthusiasts. Alongside GoldenEye 007 and Quake, Perfect Dark helped define the console shooter's transition toward deeper customization, tactical gameplay, and sophisticated multiplayer options.

Historical Trivia or Fun Fact

Perfect Dark launched in North America on May 22, 2000, as Rare's spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007, introducing an original science-fiction universe rather than relying on an existing movie license. The game was designed by a team led by Duncan Botwood, with music from Grant Kirkhope, Graeme Norgate, and David Clynick, helping give Joanna Dark's futuristic adventure its distinctive atmosphere. Rare pushed the Nintendo 64 hardware with features such as optional high-resolution graphics, advanced multiplayer Simulants, and a cartridge large enough to accommodate extensive voice acting and cinematic sequences. Its success later led to Perfect Dark Zero on Xbox 360 and an enhanced remake of the original game, securing Joanna Dark's place among gaming's most recognizable secret agents.
