But Bowser has another sinister scheme underway, and Mario, Luigi, and Wario have mysteriously disappeared after entering the castle! The adventure begins with Yoshi searching for his missing friends before the expanded cast joins the quest to rescue Princess Peach and recover the stolen Power Stars. This 3D platforming adventure for Nintendo DS brings the groundbreaking Nintendo 64 classic to handheld gaming with new characters, additional challenges, and an even bigger world of discovery.

Legacy and Influence

When Super Mario 64 arrived on Nintendo 64 in 1996, it changed the rules of platform gaming forever. Mario's leap into three dimensions introduced an extraordinary sense of freedom, with analog movement, acrobatic jumps, interactive environments, and open-ended Power Star challenges that helped establish the blueprint for countless 3D platformers. Super Mario 64 DS brought that legendary adventure to an entirely new generation, preserving the thrill of exploring Peach's castle while expanding the experience with four playable characters and additional collectibles. Rather than simply recreating the original, Nintendo gave longtime fans fresh reasons to return to the Mushroom Kingdom and newcomers a chance to discover why Mario's first major 3D adventure became a gaming milestone.

As a Nintendo DS launch title in North America, Super Mario 64 DS also made an unforgettable statement about the possibilities of Nintendo's new handheld. Here was a sprawling 3D Mario adventure, once associated with the power of a home console, now playable wherever you went! Its combination of expanded character abilities, touchscreen minigames, and local wireless competition showcased the system's distinctive features while preserving the exploration-driven gameplay that made the original famous. Alongside later Nintendo DS favorites like New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS, this release helped establish the handheld as an essential destination for Mario fans. Super Mario 64 DS remains a defining early showcase of the system and a memorable new chapter in one of Nintendo's most celebrated adventures.

Historical Trivia or Fun Fact

Super Mario 64 DS launched in North America on November 21, 2004, alongside the original Nintendo DS hardware, with development handled by Nintendo EAD. The game expanded the groundbreaking 1996 Nintendo 64 adventure, originally directed by Shigeru Miyamoto, increasing the Power Star total from 120 to 150 and adding Luigi, Wario, and Yoshi as playable heroes. One of its most surprising twists happens right at the beginning: although Mario is the star of the franchise, Yoshi is the first character players control, setting out to rescue Mario and his missing companions before the full four-character adventure opens up.
