Game Description

Return to the Johto region and begin a classic Pokémon adventure rebuilt for the Nintendo DS in Pokémon SoulSilver Version. Starting in New Bark Town, choose Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile and set out across Johto's forests, caves, coastal routes, and historic cities while earning eight Gym Badges. Your journey will bring you face-to-face with the determined Rival, the returning Team Rocket, and a trio of Legendary Pokémon—Raikou, Entei, and Suicune—that roam the region waiting to be discovered.

SoulSilver expands the original Pokémon Silver adventure with a wealth of Nintendo DS-era content while keeping Johto at the heart of the experience. Your lead Pokémon can follow you outside its Poké Ball, the Pokéathlon offers a collection of competitive athletic events, and the Safari Zone provides another place to hunt for Pokémon. The adventure eventually extends beyond Johto into Kanto, where eight additional Gym Leaders stand between you and an even greater postgame challenge. SoulSilver also supports the optional Pokéwalker accessory, allowing a Pokémon from the game to accompany you on real-world walks while earning experience and discovering additional Pokémon and items.

For collectors, Pokémon SoulSilver Version is one of the standout cartridges of the Nintendo DS Pokémon library and a defining release for fans of the Johto generation. Its version-specific connection to Lugia, the roaming Legendary beasts, the return of Kanto, Pokémon-following feature, and expanded postgame give this remake a substantial identity beyond its origins on the Game Boy Color. It captures the atmosphere of classic Pokémon Silver while bringing that adventure forward into one of the franchise's richest DS-era releases.

Legacy and Influence

Pokémon SoulSilver Version showed how a beloved Game Boy Color adventure could be transformed into a much larger Nintendo DS experience without losing the character that made the original special. Game Freak retained the core Johto journey while incorporating mechanics and features developed throughout the Pokémon series, including updated battle systems, expanded Pokémon availability, wireless functionality, and numerous side activities. The result was a remake that could satisfy longtime fans returning to Johto while giving a new generation a modernized way to experience the region.

SoulSilver also helped cement the Johto remakes as some of the most feature-rich Pokémon adventures of their generation. Having a Pokémon physically walk alongside its Trainer gave the journey a stronger sense of companionship, while the Pokéathlon, Safari Zone, Battle Frontier, and Kanto postgame provided reasons to keep playing well beyond the main storyline. The game's version-specific focus on Lugia further distinguishes SoulSilver from HeartGold and makes the two releases complementary pieces of the fourth-generation Pokémon collection.

Historical Trivia or Fun Fact

Pokémon SoulSilver Version was released in 2010, nearly a decade after the original Pokémon Silver first introduced players to Johto. SoulSilver's signature Legendary Pokémon is Lugia, while HeartGold features Ho-Oh, continuing the version-specific Legendary tradition established by the original Gold and Silver releases. The remake also brought back the original game's three roaming Legendary beasts—Raikou, Entei, and Suicune—while adding the ability for the player's Pokémon to follow them throughout the Johto adventure.
