Nanostray launched in North America in July 2005 as an early original Nintendo DS shoot-'em-up from German developer Shin'en Multimedia, published by Majesco Entertainment. The game followed Shin'en's earlier Game Boy Advance shooter Iridion II and showcased the studio's talent for squeezing impressive audiovisual effects out of Nintendo handheld hardware, combining detailed polygonal environments with fast-moving arcade action. Its four selectable weapons, touchscreen weapon interface, and score-focused gameplay helped establish a distinctive handheld shooter experience, later followed by Nanostray 2 for Nintendo DS in 2008.
