Game Description

Microcosm plunges you into a surreal internal world—piloting a miniaturized craft through the veins, arteries, and organs of a human host on a mission to eradicate a mind-controlling virus. This Sega CD version blends rail-shooter mechanics with FMV and pre-rendered backgrounds, using sprite-scaling to simulate a dangerous, shifting biological environment.

From rapid-fire enemy swarms in the bloodstream to boss encounters in the brain’s core, the journey is both visually striking and relentless. You’ll dodge cellular walls, dispatch robotic viruses, and collect power-up capsules to upgrade shields and weaponry. The game offers a mixture of fast-paced action and strategic aiming—all wrapped in a haunting, cinematic presentation propelled by Rick Wakeman’s atmospheric CD audio.

Gameplay Features

  • Rail-shooter through hyper-realistic organ interiors—veins, arteries, brain tissue—backed by FMV
  • Pilot three different micro-crafts, each with its own weapons and special abilities
  • Pick up power-ups like double-shot, laser, shield, and smart bombs during gameplay
  • Boss encounters include giant nanobot bosses and capsule-carriers through branching bio-cave paths
  • Original CD-quality soundtrack by Rick Wakeman and Tim Wright intensifies the experience

Historical Trivia or Fun Fact

Developed by Psygnosis and inspired by films like *Fantastic Voyage* and *Innerspace*, Microcosm was one of the earliest “AAA” CD-ROM titles that showcased the power of Silicon Graphics animation on Sega CD. While critics noted the gameplay was light, its visuals, music, and surreal body-travel concept earned it cult classic status among retro gamers.

The Sega CD version runs in third-person—unlike the cockpit-style PC and Amiga ports—and features video backgrounds intentionally limited to lower colors for stylistic effect. For collectors, the Sega CD release is a standout due to its CD Track audio and ambitious production values.
