Game Description

Doom, developed by Sculptured Software and published by Williams in 1995, brought one of the most influential shooters of all time to the Super Nintendo. Originally a groundbreaking PC title, this version adapted the fast-paced demon-slaying action for Nintendo’s 16-bit hardware, allowing console players to step into the boots of the unnamed space marine and fight through hellish hordes on Mars’ moons. It was one of the earliest attempts to bring true first-person shooting to a home console.

Players blast their way through labyrinthine corridors filled with grotesque demons, zombie soldiers, and other nightmarish enemies. Armed with an arsenal that includes shotguns, chain guns, and the devastating BFG, every level is about survival, exploration, and the thrill of nonstop combat. The SNES version, while scaled down from the PC original, still delivered an intense experience by utilizing the console’s Super FX2 chip to render real-time 3D environments.

Doom on the Super Nintendo remains an impressive technical feat and an important milestone in gaming history as it gave console players a taste of the FPS revolution that had begun dominating the PC landscape.

Gameplay Features

  • Classic first-person shooting adapted from the groundbreaking PC hit
  • Battle demons, zombies, and other creatures across sprawling 3D levels

  • Maze-like level design filled with secrets, keycards, and hidden passages

  • A landmark attempt to bring the FPS genre to home consoles in the mid-’90s

Historical Trivia or Fun Fact

Doom was a cultural phenomenon on PC, but its SNES port was one of the first ways console players could experience the game. Running on a special cartridge featuring the Super FX2 chip, it managed to replicate the core experience of the PC original within the constraints of the SNES. While the graphics were simplified and performance slower, it was still celebrated as a remarkable technical achievement for the system.

The release of Doom on SNES helped popularize the idea of first-person shooters on consoles, paving the way for later hits like GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark on the N64. For collectors, it holds a special place as both a curiosity and a historic milestone—the cartridge stands as proof of how far developers pushed Nintendo’s hardware to deliver one of the most important games ever made.
